ETA vs eVisa vs ESTA vs ETIAS: the practical difference

These names sound interchangeable but describe different systems. An eVisa is a visa delivered electronically; ETA, ESTA and ETIAS are destination-specific pre-travel authorisations for eligible travellers.

02

A formal visa delivered electronically.

ESTA / ETIASNamed systems

United States / European authorisations.

01

ETA is a label, not one global system

Several destinations use ETA for online pre-travel screening. Eligibility, price, activities and validity belong to that destination; approval for one country has no value in another.

The UK says its ETA lets eligible travellers travel for covered visits of up to six months. It does not guarantee entry, and the official service warns that imitation websites may charge more.

02

An eVisa is still a visa

eVisa describes how a visa is applied for or issued, not a lighter permission. The traveller still meets visa conditions, submits documents and waits for a decision.

The term is not standardised globally. India's official portal offers several e-Visa subcategories with different purposes and rules.

03

ESTA is the United States system

ESTA is used for eligible travellers under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. The programme generally covers tourism or business visits of 90 days or less, but nationality, travel history and purpose restrictions apply.

An approved ESTA is required before VWP travel; it is not a U.S. visa and does not guarantee admission.

04

ETIAS is European—and not open yet

ETIAS will be a travel authorisation for eligible visa-exempt visitors to participating European countries. The EU describes it as an authorisation, not a visa, and says it will announce the specific start date before launch.

As reviewed on 5 September 2026, ETIAS is not yet operating. Do not pay a third-party site before the official EU portal opens applications.

05

The passport number is part of permission

Electronic permission is linked to the passport used in the application. After renewal, replacement or a passport change, check whether a new approval is needed.

Approval is only one layer. Passport validity, purpose, stay limits, onward travel and the border decision still matter.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

01

Calling ETIAS a visa

The EU describes it as an authorisation for eligible visa-exempt travellers.

02

Treating every ETA alike

Each destination controls its own ETA rules.

03

Using an imitation site

Unofficial services can overcharge or collect payment before a system opens.

Quick answers

Common questions

Is an ETA the same as an eVisa?

No. An ETA is generally an authorisation; an eVisa is a visa issued electronically. Destination definitions control.

Is ESTA valid for Europe?

No. ESTA is the U.S. system. ETIAS will be the European system once it operates.

Can I apply for ETIAS now?

No. As reviewed on 5 September 2026, ETIAS is not yet in operation.

Does approval guarantee entry?

No. It permits travel to seek entry; border authorities still decide admission.
