New passport or changed name: check existing permissions

A new passport does not automatically update every travel permission. Check each issuing authority’s process and align the document you will use with the carrier’s records.

UK official examples are identified explicitly.

Confirm the rules for your own documents and route.

01

Make a document inventory

List the passports, visas, residence records and electronic authorisations relevant to the journey. Note which document each permission is associated with and use the issuer’s service to check its current status.

For a visa in an old passport, ask the issuing authority whether carrying both passports is accepted or whether transfer or replacement is required. There is no single transfer rule for all countries and visa categories.

02

UK eVisa example

Keep UKVI account identity and passport details current. GOV.UK says you should update the account when your passport or name changes; outdated details can delay travel.

The guidance says you cannot change your name or passport through this service while waiting for a visa decision. Follow the official support route if this applies. Account updates do not themselves change your immigration permission.

03

Check the booking too

Ask the carrier how to correct a name or document record, especially where a ticket was booked before the change. Confirm which supporting evidence it will accept.

Review the actual approval record after any update or new application. Allow time to resolve mismatches before check-in; a confirmation email alone may not answer which passport is linked.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

01

Assuming renewal transfers everything

Check the individual visa or authorisation system.

02

Confusing an account update with a new permission

Updating identity information does not grant a new immigration status.
