Travelling with children: documents and permission
Check the child’s own travel documents, permission to travel and any evidence of your relationship. The exact requirements depend on the route and family circumstances.
UK official examples are identified explicitly.
Confirm the rules for your own documents and route.
Check permission separately from the passport
UK example: GOV.UK says permission is required from everyone with parental responsibility, or a court, before taking a child abroad. A qualifying child arrangements order can permit travel for up to 28 days unless another order prevents it.
These are UK examples, not worldwide rules. Check any court orders and obtain appropriate advice if permission is disputed.
Prepare useful evidence
GOV.UK explains that a permission letter will usually demonstrate consent. Include trip details and contact information for the person giving permission.
Relationship evidence such as a birth or adoption certificate can help. If surnames differ, relevant marriage or divorce documents may help explain the connection. Check whether the destination asks for a particular format, translation or certification.
Confirm the whole route
Ask the destination authority what age it treats as a child and what documents apply to your circumstances. Separately confirm the carrier’s arrangements for children travelling alone or with someone other than a parent.
Prepare a document checklist for each child. Do not assume an adult’s visa or travel approval covers every person in the booking.
Common mistakes
What to avoid
A shared surname is not the whole check
Permission and parental responsibility still need consideration.
Airline acceptance is only one step
